An area of strengthening low pressure and associated fronts will push through a large area of potentially heavy rain this afternoon. As of 1:15 PM, the rain is beginning to push into the Tri-Cities area, as well as Asheville and Boone. Embedded thunderstorms, possibly containing strong winds and small hail, are possible, especially toward Asheville and points south. I expect most, if not all, severe weather to affect Georgia, South Carolina, and central and eastern North Carolina. However, a severe cell or two is not out of the question later this evening.
Total rainfall from this system is tricky to forecast…as thunderstorms will put down heavier than normal rain. A general half-inch to an inch looks good for much of the area. Mountainous areas and locations closer to the mountains could see less than this, however, as it appears the typical “Appalachian split” is occurring.
If a severe weather situation arises, we will try to keep you abreast of the situation. Have a good Saturday, and stay safe!
