Watch out in Elizabethton, Limestone Cove, and Unicoi. This storm is capable of producing penny size hail and winds in excess of 60 MPH.

Squall Line Developing Across NE Tennessee, Becoming Severe

Severe thunderstorm warning is now in effect for Carter, Johnson, Sullivan, Washington, TN, and Washington, VA, counties.

Watch out in the Tri-Cities. These storms are capable of putting down golfball size hail, 70+ MPH winds, as well as continuous cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy rain.

The line seems to be trying to extend itself into Unicoi County as well. Keep an eye to the sky there as well, as a storm may very well pop up within the next thirty minutes.

New Warning for Buncombe, SE Madison, S Mitchell, Yancey Counties

Until 4:45 PM. This includes Asheville, Bent Creek & Avery Creek, Biltmore Forest, and Mount Mitchell State Park.

Scattered Thunderstorms Developing; Some Already Reaching Severe Limits

As predicted, another round of afternoon thunderstorms is developing. Generally, their movement today has been northeasterly, where as yesterday it was north. Quite a line is developing to the east of the Appalachian spine, in North Carolina. Severe of these have already reached severe levels. To the west, another band is trying to form along the Cumberland Plateau. None of these are currently warned. As for the area in-between, scattered activity should begin to fire later. We certainly have a moist atmosphere for these storms to work with. Take a look at the current dew points:

Currently, southern Yancey County and Buncombe County are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 3:45 PM for this set of cells:

Watch out for nickel-size hail and winds in excess of 60 MPH with those. Also, Mitchell and Avery counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 4:30 PM for this line of cells:

Damaging winds of 60 MPH or greater are the main problem with this line. Finally, eastern Watauga County is under a severe thunderstorm warning (until 4 PM), as well as a flash flood warning (until 9:45 PM):
